Price a job from what it costs you.

Add up what the job will cost: materials, labor at what an hour costs you, and anything else such as permits, disposal or equipment rental. Set a markup and the calculator gives the price to quote, the gross profit in dollars, and the margin that leaves.

Total hours across everyone on the job.

What an hour of labor costs you, including payroll taxes, not what you bill it at.

Permits, disposal, equipment rental, subcontractors. Enter 0 if none.

Added on top of total cost. It has to cover overhead and profit.

The figures filled in are an example, not a typical value. Replace them with your own. Nothing you enter is saved or sent anywhere.

How it is calculated.

The same sum, in plain words.

Labor cost is labor hours times the labor rate. Total cost is materials, plus labor cost, plus other costs.

The quote price is the total cost times one plus the markup. Gross profit is the price minus the total cost, and margin is the gross profit divided by the price.

Questions about this calculator.

Should the labor rate be what I pay or what I charge?

What an hour of labor costs you: wages plus payroll taxes and any benefits, worked out per hour. The markup is what turns cost into price. If you enter a labor rate that already includes your profit and then add a markup on top, you count the profit twice and the quote comes out high.

Does the markup need to cover overhead?

Yes. The markup is the only part of the price that pays for insurance, vehicles, the office and you. A markup that only just clears materials and labor leaves nothing for running the business. The hourly rate calculator can help you see what your overhead comes to per billable hour.

Why is the margin lower than the markup?

Because margin divides the profit by the price, and markup divides it by the cost, and the price is the bigger number. A 25% markup gives a 20% margin. The markup and margin calculator converts between the two in either direction.

Can VERA build the quote for me?

Yes. Describe the job and VERA works out the quantities, picks the materials, prices the labor from your own rates and shows you the margin. The quote goes to the customer as a link they can accept and sign from their phone, and nothing is sent until you approve it.
